Junia, the beloved mule from the bestselling The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek series, comes to vivid life for children.
With over twenty-five years professional experience as an animation background painter, layout and concept artist, and children's book illustrator, I founded Flying Dog Studio in 2006 to create works of wonder and imagination.
I grew up loving animation, picture books, and puppets. In college, I studied filmmaking at Northwestern and illustration at the American Academy of Art. Now I get to design for animation and illustrate books, having worked at studios like Disney, Don Bluth, and Universal Studios. I teach at Ringling College of Art & Design.
In the old days, I painted animation backgrounds with gouache, some colored pencil, sometimes Dr. Martin's dyes. Nowadays, I paint them digitally. For children's books, it's a mix, watercolor and pencil, and some digital. It all depends on the subject matter.
